In 2008 the Council of State Governments Justice Center along with the Police Executive Research Forum published a report created for Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, U.S. Department of Justice. The report, Planning and Assessing a Law Enforcement Reentry Strategy, was designed “…to initiate an informed discussion among law enforcement agencies and community partners regarding reentry strategies.”
Recognizing that law enforcement can play a major role in successful reentry, the report stated “Reentry is a critical strategy for law enforcement and partner agencies’ efforts to prevent future crimes and victimizations. It involves a natural extension of law enforcement’s community policing activities and strong partnerships with stakeholders. Using proven problem-solving approaches, law enforcement professionals collaboratively identify the factors that drive recidivism, analyze the causes, and then develop and continually evaluate efforts that address reentry issues. Law enforcement agencies are key partners in any reentry initiative. These agencies can contribute significantly to the reentry process through a wide range of activities that increase the likelihood of a successful transition to the community for those individuals returning from jails or prisons…” Click here to go to website
On April 3, the Council of State Governments Justice Center released a new report
Lessons Learned: Planning and Assessing a Law Enforcement Reentry Strategy , that details how four law enforcement agencies applied information found in Planning and Assessing a Law Enforcement Reentry Strategy to form a partnership with with local reentry programs to reduce crime and recidivism and promote public safety.
The Las Vegas, Nevada, Metropolitan Police Department, the Metropolitan Police Department, District of Columbia, the Muskegon County, Michigan Sheriff’s Department, and White Plains, New York Police Department were the learning sites that were chosen for this report because “each had reentry strategies that addressed key aspects of a successful reentry program.”
