During 200-2015 tough on crime policies had little effect on reducing crime

Counter to current administration claims, "tough on crime" policies — which include increases in incarceration — don't work over the long term to deter crime. While the mass incarceration tactics of the 1990s had a minimal impact on crime, there is no evidence that those same practices have had any impact on crime in recent years.

Yet "tough on crime" policies are back — just when we need them least. Proponents claim that recent crime reductions reported by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting statistics for the first half of 2017 are the result of this punitive return to 1990s-era policies. They are not. Continue reading >>>
