Center for American Progress

A new Center for American Progress report reveals that 7.9% Americans in prison identify as LGBT and 7.1% people in jail identify as the same. In juvenile detention centers 20% of incarcerated young people identify as LGBT. The report, “Unjust: How the American Justice System Fails LGBT People,” opens with what happens when a LGBT person enters the system, continues with the issues faced while in the system, and ends with the problems that arise after release.

As the more people behind bars are identifying as LGBT, this important report is a must-read for those striving to create a criminal justice system that is more enlightened and just.
